By Kevin Gillies Contributing Writer Most mechanics, like Martin Ford of West Vancouver’s TLC Auto Centre, will tell you that it is the ideal time of year to give your . Cara fresh start by tuning it up. of North Van- Tune-Up also Mocz Manji couver’s Master Suggests spring aS an appropriate: time to tune up the car — especially the cooling system. “It is very important that the hedt is removed from the engine,” he says. The cooling system should be flushed to clean out any corrosion or build-up that may have ac- cumulated over the winter. Without an efficient cooling system, he says, the engine will slowly but surely start to melt. He adds that most engine prob-* lems in the summer are caused by an inefficient cooling system. | Also, the oi! and its filter must be changed because winter driving can cause the ofl to lose its lubricating properties. Oil also cotributes to reducing an engine’s heat build-up by lowering the amount of friction hetween its moving parts. The oi! can also hold particles in solution which can damage the inside of your engine. The air filter could need replac- ing depending on how saturated it is. Winter’s heavier air carries more dust particles. Hoses and belts should be checked because they can become brittle and cracked from alternat- ing temperatures. Salt, used on the roads to melt snow and ice, can also accelerate damage to rubber and metal parts. Spring is also a’ good time to have things like timing and igni- tion systems looked at to ensure ‘all is in ideal working order.
