STARTING EARLY A113 - Wednesday, October 10, 1984 - North Shore News Automobile group starting elementary alcohol program STARTING EARLY, the first alcohol awareness program of its kind in B.C., is being introduced to elemen- tary schools throughout the province by the B.C. Automobile Association. The program is specifically designed for kindergarten to grade six students and focuses on alcohol education and traffic safety. Starung Early is the brain- child of the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safe- ty. It takes an innovative ap- proach to providing children with facts about the poten- tially dangerous conse- quences of alcohol misuse without making social judgements. BCAA is distributing com- prehensive Starting Early teaching kits to every school district in B.C. Teaching techniques emphasize par- ticipation for each age group, and classroom activities capitalize on the child’s real- life experiences to ensure per- sonal and social relevance. ‘We're excited about in- troducing this new program in elementary schools throughout B.C.,"’ says BCAA’s Chairman Dennis Barkman. ‘‘From a very ear- ly age, children come into contact with alcoho! and we believe that Starting Earty will help prepare them for many alcohol-related situa- trons 7" Barkiman says clementary school is the place to begin laying foundations for ota tronal approaches to muricrous soctdal driaking Situdflons Although it will be oa humber of vears before we can adequately assess the behavorial Changes that come about as a result of this pro gram. the lonp term woal os reducing ali ohol related toad accidents and fatalities through aleohol awareness” he says foeld testing of anore chan S GOO students: carcied out by AAA showed that between the ages oat Nix atta WO. children desclopoa herghtened comeept at abeotol usage ane athituckes tormiaiel Arrekung ated dry view Nbt beer ge ts hee AOS capita as prsitese bate um hrvcow tocbpe abtecd atl te taaede ty vercregesters oN puased te ihe prom batty ot rs cevsdy ttrrcosp fastarte co cotreprre he rsty¢ stoby oboe tre hia ccet gl detepes apni ose p prerple wall be vdeo rititiedd Se Se ST TSC AN teas a bet Crafton ee Oy ee ee CS foul day alety Cudsee abheeoni al prhep bres at th tr reper ad Prous wil re, Ngee oan “ "4 t \- 1 " ! .
