By MARK HAMILTON ‘We the people don’t believe in politicians any more,’’ one member of the audience said at one point late in the meeting. ‘*That’s why we are here,”’ answered Lopushinsky. ‘*Then how come you’re talking lke one (a _politi- cian)?’’ the questioner wanted to know. The exchange was one of a dozen between Lopushinsky and several boisterous members of the small au- dience that took place during the Libertas founder’s speech and question period Thursday. ~ ote “ALL BRAKE LININGS ARE GUARANTEED FOR AS LONG In his speech, Lopushinsky said the time has come to question the principles by which we are governed. ‘‘We aren’t governed by Principles but by politicians and political expediency,’’ he said. ‘‘If we are to find real solutions we must first iden- tify a reat philosophy on which to build.”’ Lopushinsky said Libertas is based on principles and policies designed to protect the ‘‘three basic, fundamen- tal human rights’’ — to life, liberty and the right to own property. The Libertas — the Latin word meaning liberty — par- ty platform,,outlined in pam- phiets handed out at the meeting and by Lopushinsky in his speech, were touted as new ideas and valid old ones that had been resurrected. Among them are freedom of association to end com- pulsory membership in trade unions, the institution of a program of referendums for provincial government budgets and major legisla- tion, the inclusion of proper- ty rights in the Canadian Constitution and the right to recall legislators who do not live up to the expectations of the electorate. (Most of those policies were also included in the plat- form of the now-defunct Western Canada Concept Party. Libertas is not, however, a Western separatist party.) The Libertas economic policy consists of ‘‘providing % thn ie | x: re oi SORES AS YOU OWN YOUR CAR” MOST CARS REAR DRUM BRAKES INCLUDES * REPLACING BRAKE SHOES * RESURFACING BRAKE DRUMS FRONT DISC BRAKES INCLUDES * REPLACING DISC PADS * RESURFACING DISC ROTORS * REPACKING WHEEL BEARINGS the right economic at- mosphere to attract business to the province’? through deregulation of industry and commerce. Such policies, said Lopushinsky, make the Libertas Party the vehicle for achieving ‘‘long-lasting, equitable and moderate solu- tions’’ to the problems facing B.C. Lopushinsky said the Libertas Party, which went public two months ago, has a small membership that is “not into the thousands yet.’” If the Noth Vancouver response is any indication, Libertas faces a long, uphill struggle to attract members and become part of B.C.’s political scene.
