COACHES LEAGUE ACTION Defense helps Socce THE SOCCERWEST entry in the Coaches’ Soccer League parlayed an early goal and a solid defense into their first victory of the young season, 1-0 over Aard- quin Construction, after two consecutive draws. Clark De Boer scored the only goal of the match for Soccerwest (formerly Lynn Valley) on an assist from Lyle Rowat who was forced to leave the match shortly after the goal with a knee injury. For the next 65 minutes the winners played with only 10 men and defended desperate- ly as the Aardquin attackers, who hit goal-posts and cross- bars and were unlucky not to equalize, mounted almost constant pressure. Defenders Bill Fryer and Gary Brooker and goal keeper John Palmer, who recorded the shutout, were outstanding in the defensive effort which gave Soccerwest their upset Victory Iron Horse, meanwhile, broke to the front of the pack as they shutout Olympia Goldcaps 40 while thet nearest rivals, ft ynnwood Hotel and Carlings were bat thing to a hard fought | 1 draw Etsewhere, Molsons deteated Northshore Naissan 41, Totemcolor edged Ray Jonnson Plumbing 32 and Eagle Harbour surprised Labatts 7.1 iS COULD BE THE STA F SOMETHIN One Million Dollar Stock Sellout 100’s OY Paterns at SUPER SAVINGS 41 Reg. 22.98 7 16.98 Ace Prue Up Te Classics.---- 9.99 SR Sweethearts. 9.49 SR Fanfare. .--- 11.99 SR Suipovin ..- 9.97 Reg 249.99 SALE 8' Corner Guards Cleans Reg 1.39 They opened their 1983-84 season with a tough 3-2 deci- sion over arch-rivals from the East End Grandview Steelers. This year’s Flames will have a tough act to follow as the 82-83 Flames ended up winning the West Coast Jr. B League, the Pacific Coast championship and topped it all by winning the B.C. Championship. With the return of Kevin Innis, last year’s league leading goalkeeper, and Garth Tubman up from the Juvenile ranks, the Flames again will have a= strong tandem in the nets. The defense will also be solid with four of last year’s defensemen returning. Steve Corcoran, Cary Manns, Dave Willetts and Gord Wilson along with rookies Cam Drew and Joe Ceraldi round out the defense. Last year’s captain and league’s most valuable player, Joe Tadey will not be returning but Joe’s younger brother Paul will take Joe’s spot. The forwards are not all that big but what they lack in size make up in puck handl- ing and speed. Also returnees: Dave McMaster, Dave Clark, Howie Stoh!, Randy Moberg and Mike Harris. With some fine looking propsects . up from the Juvenile ranks, the Flames should have a well balanced attack. Taking over the coaching duties this year will be Nick Sita. Nick has been one of the most successful coaches in minor hockey in the Lower Mainland. Handling the scoring for the Flames in last Saturday’s win was Jim Wilson assisted by brother Gord and Howie Stohl. Rookie Steven Frost unassisted, and Steve Cor- coran from Dave McMaster and Cary Manns.
