WEST VANCOUVER LEARNS WEST VANCOUVER'’S got the land but no one’s got the money to put senior citizen housing on it. John C. Johnston, deputy minister of lands, parks and housing for the province, wrote to Mayor Derrick Humphreys this month that provincial money for seniors housing will have to go to rural areas and to Van- couver. Humphreys explained in an earlier letter that “There will never be another time when we can provide senior citizen housing in West Van- covuer as reasonably as we can at this time.” Humphreys explained that council purchased last year, four properties in the Ambleside area to assemble 2,415 metres of developable land. “We have documented the very real need for an addi- tional senior citizens housing project in West Vancouver,” the mayor stated, referring to a recent study showing that some 7,700 West Van- couverites will be over age 65 by 1992. Johnston replied that rural area seniors housing is a top priority because little or no rental housing of any kind is available to seniors there. And three projects in Van- couver have been approved because of “long-standing priority”. also quashed mayor's suggestion to dip in- ; to lottery funds. “Lottery or quest,” Johnston said. it's so easy ... the ictoria nixes plan for seniors’ housing All - Wednesday, April 27, 1983 - North Shore News other funds cannot be used for the purpose you re- Another pub plan the dust “ME-TOO MANIA;, is sweeping Upper Lonsdale, Alderman Elko Kroon said as North Vancouver City council considered yet another neighborhood pub application for the area. Council rejected the request from the Black Sheep Restaurant = for permission to apply to the provincial government for pre-site clearance for a pub. Council has received similar requests from three other businesses in the area. The Black Sheep was built under a land use contract, which specifies the uses permitted at the restaurant, and those uses do not in- clude a neighborhood pub, Alderman Frank Marcino said. Council’s new pohcy on neighborhood pubs only allows them in the com- mercial zones, and the Black Sheep, though at the edge of a commercial zone, is on land zoned for public assembly, Marcino said.
