That funny game the soccer purists love to hate

is back again.

Indoor: soccer kicks off
Tuesday night at the Agro-
dome, this year under the
care and control of Terry
Yorath, who is trying out his
hand at coaching for the first
time.

And from all sides, the
word seems to be that the
Captain of the outdoor Caps
is going to make a smooth
transition to the fast paced
indoor game.

North Shore afficiandos of
the funny game will be able
to get out and cheer for
Barry Dearden, the former
Carson Graham soccer

athlete who was the Cap’s

third round draft choice last

Dearden, who has been
undergoing steady seasoning
with the Whitecap Reserve
would appear to have nailed
down a front line position
with the Indoor entry and
will most likely be in action
on Tuesday against the
Seattle Sounders.

Paul Nelson, who along
with Yorath, seems to take a
bum rap from the unwashed
element of the soccer crowd
has been named Captain of
the side, at 23 the youngest
in the league.

Last year, playing in the
echoing confines of the
Pacific Coliseum, Caps took
the division title only to lose
out to Edmonton Drillers,
the team that went on to take
the league title. This year’s
version of the Caps, playing
in the more homely confines

of the Agrodome look even

stronger than the ‘80-81
editic 1.
Other performers back

from last year are Mark
Nickeas, Carl Valentine who
is currently nursing a slight
ankle ligament injury, Alan
Goad, fresh from his role as
Community Relations officer
with the front office and the
man named ‘the unsung
hero’ by the players, and Ron
Village.

BARRY DEARDEN

Helping out with the
coaching as well as playing
again this season is Buzz
Parsons, one of the ‘nice
guys’ of the game. Buzz has
recovered from the nagging
foot injury which kept him
on the fringes most of last
year.

The pair of Swedes,
Anders Palmer and Anders
Olsen, will probably act as a
forward line with Parsons. Ia
a tilt against the Youth team
last week, Palmer scored
four goals in the Caps 8-0

could be an enjoyable way to
spend a few evenings over
the winter.

Even though the purists
may frown, and the team
most likely won't pick up
major coverage from the
media, they provide good
value for the money.

Besides, with Peter
‘Thunderfoot’ Lorimer on
the field for the first three
games, it’s well worth the
price of admission just to see
the opposition goalie wince
when the popular assistant
coach winds up.

Besides, there are no
fights in these games.
