B13 - Sumday, March 7, 1982 - North Shore News ES entertainment The Merry Widow has every reason to be merry By NANCY WEATHERLEY THE MERRY WIDOW is an absolute pleasure to review as I can look back on a most en- joyable evening while doing it. The North Shore Light Opera Society has much to be proud of in their production of the light hearted Franz Lehar classic which opened Thursday at North Van Centennial Theatre. It is a colorful and exuberant production full of fun and nonsense and some very fine singing. Dawne Lacterman, who keeps her lungs in shape by running marathons, does a fine job playing Anna, the wealthy widow trying to decide on her next husband. THE MERRY WIDOW (Dawne Lacterman) is seen singing to her many suitors. The show continues March 11, 12 and 13 at North Vancouver Centennial Theatre Eggertston photo) At the movies BROADWAY 707 West Broadway (874-1977) CAPITOL, 820 Granville Mal. Together they do credit to some of the beautiful melodies for which The Merry Widow is famous, such as The Merry Widow Waltz, and Driving in the Park with You. But Villa, one of the show's finest melodies was a litte disappointing, as it was almost too controlled and seemed to lack power. Jill Diane Filion’ was outstanding as Valencienne. Her voice is delighfully clear and she carned off the role of the flirtatious am- bassadors wife to per- fection. Also worth noting are Earl Harmison as Baron Zeta, Bob Wadden Ravenscroft, and George well paired as handsome and _ persistent suiters to the wealthy widow's hand, Jeff Harms as Kromov, a jealous husband, and the dancers. Although the show was a little slow at first, and the orchestra seemed to take some time to warm up, once the show took off, in the second act it was extremely well received by a full house. The’ liveliest numbers, Women, Women, Women. and The Grisettes song, inspired vociferous thusiasm. The colorful constumes and the sets designed by Jeff Harns also deserve notice. ¢€n- The show continues next Thursday to Saturday at 8:00 and at $5 for adults its an entertainment bargain.
