B8 - Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1981 - North Shore News - Mi entertainment I A : ae . 4 ia Lo 4 - a t. fo oe . : ee When Hank’ Williams ed on to the stage at Nashville’s Grand Old Opry in June, 1949, and sang Lovesick Blues, the crowd went wild. At the age of 25, Hank Williams had hit the top. Three years and eleven gold records latér, Hank Williams was a broken man. He was found dead, at the age of 29, on New Year's Day, 1953, a victim of drugs and booze and fame. Hank Willilams lives on in 1981 through Sneezy Waters in Hank Williams: The Show He Never Gave, at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre in October. Both Sneezy Waters fans and Hank Williams fans who missed the show when it was in Vancouver im 1979 for four nights only will get a chance to see the play. Hank Williams: The Show He Never Gave is an unusual combination of concert and theatre, brought to life by Sneezy Waters’ uncanny physical and vocal resem- blance to the country music king. The play was written by Maynard Collins, and it’s come a long’ way since. its first performance in Ottawa in 1977. During a Canadian tour in 1978-79, the show played to full houses all’ across the country, and the show toured the United States in 1980. A CBC radio production .of Hank Williams: The -Show He Never Gave, recently won the coveted Prix Monaco, an international radio award. A film production of the show is in the final stages of post- production, and will be released early in 1982. But now, folks in and around Vancouver have a chance to see the original stage ver- sion. The songs of Hank Williams (Your Cheatin’ Heart, Jambalaya, Hey Good Looking’, I Saw The Villiams never gave Light) assure him im- mortality, but it is this show that assures the imortality of his tragic story. It is Sneezy Waters, whose real name is Peter Hodgson, who answers the pivotal question - what kind of show would Hank Williams have given New Year’s Eve, 1952, the night before he died? Sneezy Waters was long a fine performer in his own right before the role of Hank Williams brought him to the attention of millions. Waters already had plenty of Hank Williams tunes in his repertoire when writer Collins approached him about the role of Hank Williams. Playing the role, Sneezy Waters gives a concert in a bar decorated for New Year’s Eve. He’s backed by his band, The Drifting Cowboys (played by George Essery on steel guitar, Keith Glass on lead guitar, David ARTHUR (M) Capitol 6 - 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Park Royal 7:30, 9:15. Mat.
