_ Dear Editor: .. me In the: ‘beginning of -1978 we moved into an area just off the Pool 88 section of Riverside Drive. In the late summer of that year we went to a meeting "called by local residents and attended by Mayor Bell together. with one alderman who, I think had just retired and a gentleman who at that time would promise anything to get on council. We also had the benefit of advice from two members of the RCMP present, and nostalgic re-incantations of identical meetings as recalled by long term residents. The mayor and alderman present, of course, were not Dear Editor: TI had some difficulty in following the thread of the discussion in Heddy An- dersen's letter in the News of August 12, but I assume that the basic point was given in the heading “Unwanted Kids Suffer”. I cannot accept this as a valid argument in favor of abortion as a means of preventing the birth of unwanted children. First of all, I believe that most normal women who may feel that their pregnancy is unwanted will change their mind when the child is born and will give it the care and affection it deserves. For example — I imagine that 50 and more years ago, before the advent of modern birth control methods, most pregnancies were unwanted — especially after the first two or three children were’ born. However, most were rn. terminated by abortier .1, as far as I am awar ,. m~at of the resultine ~’.:J-cn were not mis*. cated aad unhappy. Ore th.y were born, they tor that bicthday, anniversary or special Occasion. were loved and cared for by their parents. Secondly, today we have much more satisfactory ~ methods of birth control. I presume that the Andersens used one of these and I am pleased that they have thereby managed to restrict their family without having to resort to abortion. This is what I advocated in my original letter, but un- fortunately the relevant sentence was garbled by the typesetter. It should have read: “However, | am not addressing myself here to the women who submit them- selves to this operation. except to urge them to exercise their freedom of choice by choosing traception as a preferable solv’sn te problem.” H- .ever, my original ‘wer was directed more to tue medical profession, whose attitude 1 find in- comprehensible. I was moved to write it after reading an essay by the famous surgeon and writer cor suck the Richard Selzer of the Yale Medical Centre. In it he described the horror of the bystanders on August 6, 1975 when a hospital gar- bage bag was accidentally spilled on a U.S. city street and out fell numerous remnants of aborted human fetuses. 1 quote “Later the hospital director ... tells you that, by mistake, the fetuses got mixed up with the other debris. (Yes, he says other: he says debris).” He also described the first abortion he witnessed and his reactions to it -- the reaction of sensitive, thinking + ..34ane being. What I wanted to hear was the reaction of other medical practioners and officials who support abortion and their justification of this horrible slaughter that has reached epidemic proportions and is largely unnecessary. | am still waiting.
