During the year that the home has operated, the 10- bedroom house has main- tained an average occupancy of 90-95 per cent and has frequently had to turn away women and their children at times when it has been full. The earliest challenge of the North Shore Crisis Services Society was to con- vince Victoria of the need for such a project, in order to get funding. After just six months in operation, the provincial government authorities were sufficiently convinced to guarantee future funding. The validity and need for a North Shore retreat for battered women is further indicated by the fact that Human Resources has decided not only to continue funding but to increase it from $66,000 to $99,648. “We didn’t use to have any kind of guaranteed income and had to prove there was a need,’’ says Wendy Mickelson, coordinator of the house since September. “A lot of people, when the house first opened, didn't believe there were battered women on the North Shore.” Or NO STEREOTYPE There is no stereotype of the battered wife and staff at Emily Murphy House have found it can be just about anyone. “We get a broad range of people from all socio-econo- mic groups, backgrounds and ages. It is married women, common law rela- tionships and single women getting abused by their boy- friends.” Women in their sixties use the home and so do teen- agers, although this younger group can present legal difficulties. “The problem area we are running into is women from ages 17 to 19, who we are not supposed to take but have to aon wh JAN. 2&3° All Our Watches 30... featured— Seiko Ultra thin Dress Quartz Regular $275 SALE $192.50 North Vancouver FROM PAGE A1 . suddenly BULOVA - CARAVELLE - SEIKO Gould & McCue Jewellers 3102 Edgemont Bivd. because there are no alterna- tive facilities,” the coordina- tor explains. “Under B.C. law they are considered children, as oppesed.to adults, but facili- ties available for juveniles so there is a real gap in the service.” Mickelson is convinced there is a need for the establishment of some kind of emergency home on the North Shore to care for women in those age groups. In fact she feels there should be three or four other similar homes on this shore. From the number of people being referred to other centres in Vancouver at times when Emily Murphy House is full, she's satisfied the North Shore warrants two such facilities. Since the centre is designed to cater for im- médiate emergencies and providing women with some- where to go when these happen, stays are limited to 30 days. However, women and children escaping abuse often need continued follow- up support and Mickelson says there is a need for a second-stage house for these situations. Further pressure is added on the limited space of the home as it has to double as an emergency shelter for women who are not in situa- tions of abuse but who find themselves and require im- accommodation homeless mediate urgently. There is a_ noticeable absence of facilities for men in similar situations and Mickelson thinks an emer- gency shelter home is required for both men and women. The increased grant to the crisis services society has — been put into staffing and means the home now has personnel on hand at weekends from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Previously it had only been staffed 3-11 p.m. at - weckends. The centre still doesn't have 24-hour staffing at any time, eventual objective. The address of Emily 985-1500 | which is the staff's - Murphy House is not publicized so women going there can feel confident that the situation of abuse they are leaving will not follow them there. They are given the address on dialling the 6913. Mickelson says: “We have quite a number of ad- missions which happen during the night and staff go out from the answering service.” The extra funding has also allowed most increases in staff salaries which Mickelson describes as being “very needed as they were very underpaid.” As well as the coor ’ dinator, the house -has three full-time staff and a part- time psychologist is also on hand and=sruns_= group sessions. Situations that have driven the women to the home often leave them suffering from considerable stress which requires support and counselling. Mickelson explains: “The woman is trying to establish herself independently and it can be really difficult for her to get started. She is having to deal with physical injuries sometimes as a result of battering, and a lack of self esteem and self confidence.” Such problems can create tension and outbursts against ” staff and other occupants of the home. But Mickelson says situa- tions do not get out of hand ' to the point that staff cannot handle them and need out-: side help. are. serious conflicts between residents, _ she says, usually they can be resolved and the women generally find that being in an environment with other people in the same situation is supportive, through a mutual sharing of problems. Such situations have repeatedly sparked up friendships which have | lasted long after the period of residence in the home. ' ~ - GOLDEN CAPITAL4~ CHINESE RESTAURANT *fully licenced open 4-11 pm.
