North Vancouver City will soon no longer be the cheapest municipality in the Lower Mainland in which to Own an un-neutered male dog. City council last week decided to raise the cost of dog licences to bring them in line with North Vancouver District, a move that will quadruple the cost of licensing an un-neutered male dog. A8-Sunday News, November 9, 1980 | When the _—inecessary amending bylaw is passed, City residents will have to pay $7 a year for a spayed female or a neutered male dog and $22 for an unspayed female or un-neutered male. Staff had _ originally suggested raising the licensing fee from $5 to $7 for neutered animals and from $5 and $10 to $20 for un-neutered animals. Alderman Gordon Cross disagreed with this and Some dog licence fees to quadruple in North Van City argued that the fees should be dropped to $1 for neutered dogs and raised to $50 for un-neutered dogs. This motion failed to find a seconder, but a suggestion by Alderman Billi Sorenson to bring the City’s fee structure in line with the District was quickly ac- cepted by council. But not before the debate had degenerated somewhat with Alderman Gary Payne admitting that he had owned a male dog for 11 years and was still not quite sure how male dogs do whatever they do to female dogs to make puppies. After offers by various aldermen to broaden Alderman Payne's education, Alderman Stella Jo Dean for some reason then informed council that her Samoyed was probably the only bilingual dog im North Vancouver City.
