Usually, I return from a
vacation with a long list of
good restaurants for readers
to try. This time my list is
slightly different. Call it
“Desperation Delight”!

During the first few days
of storms, only three places
were serving breakfast. The
first we tried was a place on
Front St. in Lahaina —
calied Longhi's.
there, we took off our shoes,
rolied up our pantlegs and
slogged through foot-deep
puddles: It wasn't worth the
effort, unless you are ad-
dicted to lukewarm coffee,
overdone sausages and cold
eggs. Each. order was ac-
companied by “toast” — a
small, burned chunk of
French bread. They had no
excuse, either, because a

condo ended up at Mc-
Donald’s. Due to the storms,
all that was served was the
usual lunch-dinner fare and
who needs a hamburger at
9:00 a.m.? Mind you, they
fed their family of four for
ten bucks while we parted
with twenty.

Next day, we tried the
Pioneer Inn. A cheery little
waitress informed us that if
the power didn’t fail, they
had a complete menu BUT,
should it quit, “All eggs
become scrambled and all
toast becomes bread.”
Naturally, the lights went out

Cosmetics on sale in China

PEKING (UPI) - Western
cosmetics went on sale for
the first time in Peking today
but only foreigners could
buy them.

Special stands appeared in
the lobby of the Peking
Hotel and in the Friendship
store to sell the products of
the American cosmetic firms
Max Factor, Halston and
Geminisse, and the French
brand Orlane.

But the products could be
bought only with foreign
currency. Only foreigners
and Chinese with special

contacts can enter the
Peking Hotel and _ the
Friendship store.

During the past year Coca-
Cola and Time and
Newsweek magazines also
have gone on sale — again
only for foreigners in
Peking.

What is it? Well, it’s a
seven-egg creation filled

with ham, bacon, sausage,
three kinds of cheese,
mushrooms, fresh tomatoes,
onions, green pepper and
potatoes. Delicious.

The kids recommend the

strawberry pancakes. All
servings are very large.
Dinner was another

problem. Usually, we leave
the kids to their own
devices, except for two or
three magnificent meals in
the most exclusive places we
can find. Meanwhile, Brian
and I make a getaway every
night to dine by
candlelight. With few places

open and candlelight our

normal “way of groping
around the condo, we only
managed two “getaways”.

TORTILLA FLATS in the
Wharf is excellent and
inexpensive. The theme is
Mexican but they serve
seafood platters in the six to
seven dollar range for the
faint-hearted. If you like
Mexican food but can't cope
with “hot stuff", the waiters
will guide you to the milder
offerings.

Here, too, the servings are
enormous. Two people with
moderate appetites could
easily share one of the
combination plates, ($6.50
to $7.50). We both ordered
separately and traded

left-overs would ,have fed
two starving boat people.
Including two margaritas.
one C.C. and soda and an
extra bowl of guacamole, we
had lots of change left over
from a twenty-dollar bill.

Another evening. we
dropped into the “Rusty
Harpoon” for a drink — with
full intentions of returning to
the condo to barbeque hot
dogs with the kids. Soon, we
got into a conversation with
a couple from Minneapolis
who were seated at the next
table. Lo and behold, they
were staying in a unit two
floors down in the same
building. An hour later, we
said “goodbye” to the hot
dogs and went to KIMO'S
for dinner. This, too, is on
Front St., near the Pioneer.
Everyone commended the
steaks. I had mahi-mahi
(fish) grilled with macadamia
nuts and enjoyed it. Bill for
four, including tip, wine and
drinks — about $75.

There is a PIZZA HUT in
Lahaina. It serves pizza. And
a salad bar. And a few other
things. I got the shock of my
life when I observed one
customer sampling the salad
dressings ‘by sticking her
finger into the jugs, one by
one, and licking it off. She
didn't even have ‘the'couth to
change fingers! ....-.-
