WHIAT’S that old
cliché?

An ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure ... Well
as far as stopping burglaries, it
couldn’r be more true. I think
you've probably heard a lot of
these things before, but they
need to be said.

There are many ways to
help prevent burglaries but the
most important of these is to
take away the temptation.

One of the most commen
mistakes that I sce is the people
that buy a brand new 32” TV,
for example, and advertise their
shiny new toy to all that care
by putting the box next teu the
garbage can. [can walk
through most: neighborhoods
on garbage day and see exactly
who bought that brand new
TV or computer system. Break
down your boxes and toss
them in the commu ty reey-
cling bin

all temptations out of dired

When you are on holidays,
try not to make it obvious thar
you are away from your home.

For example, don’t leave a
message on your answering
machine stating where you are
or how Jong you will be away.
Ask a neighbor or fricad to
bring in vour mail. IF you are

neighbors, let them know shat

watch over your house. Most
acighbors are nosy enough
that this wouldn't be an incon:
venience.

This one encompasses
evervthing: try to make vour
house appear lived in. A simple
light timer works great tor this
or even 2 series of Himers to
make it Jock like there is ac
ity in the home (Some security
systems even have hyht timer
options).

Deterrent. are almost the
same as prevention, althousb
they abo involve the more
visual or physical aspects of
what can be dane bath cutside
and inside your home or busi-
ness, to make it less appealing
to the potential burglar. And
soine of these things don’t
necessarily cost much or any-
thing ar all.

The most common deter-
rents are:

@ Window bars, thev’re ugly
but sometimes necessary. They
can be made to look decora-
tive. Other options for small
windows include window film.
@ Increasing vistbilirs (crim
hedges, increase lighting);

@ a sccurity system;

watch, alarm ets. ):

@ omarking all of voeur valu-
ables. Most police departments
have equipment available for
