This is something Canada has to understand too. Whether or not it translates into what goes on in practice in salmon farming that’s something that would be looked at for the future.” The Salmon Aquaculture Review, released in August 1997, says it is not known whether favorable attributes such as increased growth rates would allow escaped trans- genic salmon to successfully out-compete wild salmon for resources. Currently, the government > prohibits the commercial farming of transgenic salmon in. marine net cages. At the West Van lab off Marine Drive, work is being done in fish nutrition and genetic work, said Davis. The DEO announced plans to offer the operation of the lab to a private-sector consor- tium that includes fish process- ing firms, Syndel Laboratories, the Science Council of B.C. and universities such as SFU and UBC. The DFO will remain involved. Without the help of the private sector, the lab would have been a victim of DFO funding cuts. DFO had 25 fisheries staff on site, but now has two scientists and a total of five people, said Davis. The rest of the employces were moved or took early retirement, said Davis. He expects it to be another year before the lab is in full operation under the new con- sortium. The DFO has signed 11 short-term leases with five organizations and more are under consideration. A not-for-profit society called the Pacific Institute for FROM Aquatic Biosciences has been formed with the lease holders and an interim board of direc- tors has been appointed, said Davis. Eventually, the society will act as an umbrella under which the lab will be run. It 3 48s BTWiN will have a board of directors and a formal relationship with : : Soy -_ Fisteties and Oceans. “Davis ED'S LINENS « RICHMOND. “COQUITLAM NORTH VAN WHITE ROCK VANCOUVER PORT COQUITLAM KERRISDALE | said there are no aquaculture representatives on the interim 7000 ALDERBRIOGE WAY ~ 800-229 NORTH ROAD’ PARF-A TILFORD PLAZA “520 PENINSULA VILLAGE S30LSHESTEROADWAY-~” 2566 BARNET 2142. 41ST AVE - “BC.
