— Skytrain fi ~ NVD wish list Counci! seeks support of other municipalities By Jolanda Waskits Contributing Writer THE Nerth Shore has been stand- ing in line, waiting eagerly to be the next area linked to the rest of the world by SkyTrain. Unfortunately, it’s not in the plans. That realization prompted North Vancouver District council to send a clear message to B.C. Transit and the Greater Vancouver Regional District that it wants the Norti, Shore linked with SkyTrain. “We've been shafted,” Cous. Ernie Crist said on Feb. 10. “We have more cars and people than other areas. Why give it to New West or uitlam?” Crist said residents on the North Shore own more than 100,000 cars and make 160,000 trips by car over the Second Narrows and the Lions Gate bridges per day. Richmond has 90,000 cars while Coquitlam has 70,000, he said. “We are stuck with more buses, when we clearly know buses will not solve the prob- lem. The bridges will only be congested again,” he said. Vancouver Regional Transit Commis- sion’s five-year plan for the North Shore includes more buses across the Second Narrows Bridge, more frequent SeaBus ser- vice during peak hours, and a direct bus con- nection from Jovce SkyTrain station in Burnaby to Phibbs Exchang: Coun. Jaaice Harris said the North Shore should qualify for a Light Rapid Transit addi- tion considering the volume of traffic using the two bridges. “But we shouldn’t build it in isolation but added on to the system that already exists,” she said. Coun. Lisa Muri agreed. “I’m not interested in being held hostage by only a certain kind of transit system,” she said. “There’s talk about another SeaBus sta- tion.” Council would like the City of North Vancouver and the District of West Vancouver to join to pressure the GVRD to bring SkyTrain across Burrard Inlet.
