Some interesting changes are
in store for 7-series lovers.
After a one-year time out, the
short-wheelbase 740i returns to
the lineup. Accerding to BMW,
custor:er demand was respon-
sible fc. its reintroduction. Both
740i and 740iL models are
powered by a 4.4-litre, 32-valve
V8 engine that is also shared
by the 540i. Generating 282
horsepower at 5,700 rpm, the
V8 is mated to a five-speed
electronic automatic transmis-
sion, the only combo available
on the 740 version. The 750iL
comes with the awesome 5.4-
litre SOHC V12 (also oniy avail-
able with the five-speed auto-
matic). This aluminum beauty
whips up 322 horses at 5,000
rpm in a more fuel efficient
manner than its previous incar-
nation, and, according to BMW,
can move this two-tonne status
symbol from rest to 100 km-h
in a mere 6.€ seconds. Both 7-
series products come complete
with every power option that
has ever been invented, or
thought of, for a motoring con-
veyance — including the
world’s first electrically-heated

Steering wheel and pyrotechnic
seatbelt tensioners —- a smail
explosive charge that, when the
airbags are deployed, tighten
the seatbelts. Now. For 1997.
the 7-series also receives
BMW’s first installation of side
airbags in a pasenger Car.
