26 - Wednesday, August 10, 1994 - North Shore News _ Arts exhibition accents Commonweaith Games LOCAL ATHLETES will not be the sole representatives of North Shore talent at the XV Commonwealth Games, starting Thursday, Aug. 18, in Victoria. By Layne Chrisiensen NOW Reporter West Vancouver-born sculp- tor Emily Disher-Morgan is one of 500 local and international artists who will take part in The Works Victoria, the Games’ arts and cultural festival. The Works will mount 40 exhibits in a variety of venues including foyers of downtown department stores, art galleries, and shop windows. Disher- Morgan’s 140-pound life-size bronze resin sculpture, Astarte Pacifique, adorns the window of the Paul Da Costa Institute, at 1402 Douglas St., for the dura- tion of the Games. The statue, named after the Babylonian goddess of love and war, and guardian of ships, will then find a permanent home on a rocky outcrop at Aguillar House Resort in Banfield on Vancouver Island. Site listings for The Works can be obtained at any Victoria tourist information centre or by phoning (1) 995-1605. John Moore WINE SPOTS MISSION HILL CRAND RESERVE BARREL SELECT CHARDONNAY 1992 $14.95 Hold onto your tastevin! Are you silting down? This 8.C. wine _ was named the best chardonnay in the world at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London. Who’d've thunk it? Tasters were understandably flabbergasted when they found oui the winner they'd voted for was a Canadian wine. We've come a long way baby. Go to the specialty section and treat yourself to a bottle of history. CHATEAU TRONQUOY LALANDE 1990 $24.95 Most vintage charts rate 1990 as an “offish” year, not as dismal as '87 but a cut below the won- derful ‘88s and ‘89s. You wouldn't know it from this superbly concentrated and beauti- wag fully balanced Bordeaux. More forward and fruity now than when tasted at the Playhouse International Wine Festival this spring, but give it a little breathing room for an hour to get full value for your splash out. BARRIADA RESERVA 1990 =: ALIANCA $7.80 (Portugal) Portugese reds made from the Baga grape are currently the poor boy’s zinfandels. “Zin,” a primi- tive rustic grape that makes potent fruity wines, is being rapidly “gen- trified” by Californian wine-mak- ers only too happy to relieve you of $25 for a bottle of juice that, only a few years ago, was a wino’s brown-hagger. Baya grapes actually produce wines smoother and fruitier than any zinfandel: made for those = nights around the barbecue when you just want to burn sausages and toss the salad to the raccoons. me wo 2 EMILY DISHER-MORGAN accompanied her bronze resin sculp- ture, Astarte Pacifique, from England, where she now lives and works, to Victoria, where the statue will be on display for the duration of the XV Commonweaith Games. At that time [ pluggea Linda Boyd sight unseen in Little Shop of Horrors. A risk? Not at all. Boyd has a strong voice and uses it well as Audrey, the girl with the talent for losers and abusers. But its the dramatic quality she brings to her songs that adds so much depth to each number. When will the theatres in this town wake up to ine fact that this woman can act as well as sing? Boyd gets strong support from James Cronk as the nerdy Seymour, Alan George as the sadistic dentist and Doug McLeod as the voice of the plant with plans. From page 20 vulnerability that keeps the show honest. A tip of the paintbrush to designer Ted (call me Emily) Roberts for the fun in the simple set.
