Germans popularized tradition

know it today first appeared.

German legend tells the tale of
a good, kind-hearted family who
was rewarded for the generosity
they displayed in taking in a
small, shivering boy on a cold
Christmas Eve.

The child was revealed to be the
Christ child and the reward was a
marvellous fir tree which promised
them a fruitful and abundant life.
In the 15th century, legend
became custom when. Martin
Luther is said to have popularized
and condoned the practice.

of the Christmas tree interesting.

“It weuld seem improbable to
expect to see a tree in full bloom
at Christmas. That is why it
would not be irrational to con-
sider the appearance of a cherry
tree in full bloom at this time of
year to be slightly miraculous.
There is, however, one variety of
Japanese flowering cherry (prunus
subhirtella “‘Autumnalis’> which
regularly offers the miracle of
cherry blossoms in winter.

I guess you might want to con-
sider this as nature’s way of dec-
orating a Christmas tree.

Xmas concert line-up

THE NORTH SHORE Chorus,
Vancouver City Singers and Van-
couver Children’s Bach Choir join
the Vancouver Symphony Or-
chestra in a special Christmas per-
formance tonight at the Orpheum
Theatre.

The performance will conclude
with a Christmas carol sing-along.
Audience members will be invited
to join maestro Howard Cable in
acelebration of the season.

The North Shore Chorus, head-
ed by music director Terry Pitt-
Brooke, is a 60-voice community
choir founded in 1975. The North
Shore Chorus is hosting the 1992
Chorfest, a provincial choral fes-
tival, next May in North Van-
couver.

Festival of Lights at Van Dusen
Gardens. This annual affair is in
full swing until Jan. $ until 9 p.m.
nightly. The gardens are closed on
Christmas Day, but will stay open
for New Year’s Eve.

Locally, the tradition continues
at our own Park & Tilford
Gardens. The gates open at 9:30
a.m. and the 30,000 lights go on
at 4 p.m. until closing at 10 p.m.
Admission is free and you have
