Jerry Lewis telethon benefits local residents MORE THAN 75 residents of the North Shore, Richmond and Vancouver ar¢ among British Columbians who’ll benefit directly from the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dvysirophy Telethon in B.C. this Labor Day weekend. The telethon — broadcast on UTV from 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. ! unti! 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2 is a major fund raising vehicle for the B.c. & Yukon Region of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada (MDAC). The association was formed 37 years ago as a national voluntary agency committed to eliminating neuromuscular disorders and alleviating the associated distress. The association offers hope through research, creates awareness and understanding through education, and provides services through client-care pro- grams which — in British Colum- bia — serve some 650 people, in- cluding those on the North Shore who are served by MDAC’s Greater Vancouver unit. Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder whose most common symptom is wasting and progressive weakness of the muscles that control body move- ment. Funds raised by MDAC through the telethon and other activities, many of them supported by fire fighters in British Columbia, go towards research directed at fin- Pnone services for people with special needs. We have products and services that can make using the telephone more convenient for people with hearing, speech, sight or motion impairments.
