WEST VANCOUVER Fire Lt. Fred Bain recently graduated from
the first responder trainers’ program at the Justice Institute of
B.C. Bain is now ready to train other members of local fire and
police departments in emergency first aid.

“In the past. paramedies had to
start front scratch when they ar-
rived at an accident scene.” said
paramedic academy director bony
Williams. ‘Now with a trained
first responder on the seene,
they quickly find out what's
been done, and can bevin their
care from there."

Williams said first responders
are trained to secure the scene and
ensure there is no further risk of
injury from fire, gas spills or
other factors.

They are also trained to obtain
a preliminary picture of the extent
of injuries before paramedics ar-
rive,
