MAILBOX 7 - Friday, August 18, 1989 -. North Shore Mews VANCOUVER JEEP EAGLE Unfair’ to banish dogs VANCOUVER'S BEST SELECTION Dear Editor: To set the record straight, the proposed ‘‘doggie park’’ at Cates, a designated off-leash area, is a short, often muddy, mostly unused trail on the outer border of little Cates — far away fron the ocean and picnic areas. Dog owners are not to blame for uncontrolled dogs or their piles they leave behind — blame those who allow their dogs to roam free. There is not much we can do about this problem as there i3 not much we can do about people who litter the park with non- biodegradable garbage and broken . It is unfair that we be banished to the out-of-the-way and often dangerous trails — as many of us ars women alone or senior citizens .who don’t drive. ‘ Furthermore, this paranoia over “suing the district over dog at- .tacks’’ is simply another gross ex- aggeration dreamed up by the self- ish and ignorant minds of the an- ti-dog group. + Ambleside Doggie Park, on a much grander scale, is a good ex- ample. There have been no such problems with many children around, and not even a coliform pellution problem with sc many dogs i in the water. :; Why? Because there are no boats emptying their tanks, and there are no broken sewers. It ‘Should also be known that human feces are far more disease and virus ridden than are dogs’. __ As a tax and dog licence paying group, it is time we received the little we ask for. Most of us clean Cove pollution is a ‘tragedy’ Dear Editor: The serious pollution problem in Deep Cove is indeed « tragedy as Deep Cove has got to be one of the loveliest,- most scenic areas in ‘North America or even the worid. The swimming area is also about the nicest in all of the Lower Mainland with its saudy beach and warm, clear water. The closing of the beach to swimmers at the beginning of summer because of pollution is the ultimate irony and tragedy of such an incredibly spiendid and beautiful area. ” Hopefully this problem can be resolved, and quickly, as it would be a human and environmental tragedy. if the polluticn problem was to remain a permanent neme- sis. The majestic beauty of the fegion makes this pollution prob- lem a very serious matter that must be dealt with sftectively and im- mediately. Perhaps one of several possible solutions would be to have boats dispense their wastes much farther out at sea and exercise due restraint, if possible. when in the cove area. T.E.
