EVER SINCE Paui Bunyon and
his cx Babe roamed the forests of
North America, there has been a
myth that loggers are a special
breed unto themselves.

Meet the real McCoy at the 29th
annual Squamish Days Worid
Championship Logging Festival,
held from July 3! through August
4,

Attracting competitors from as
far away as <Australia, New
Zealand, United States, and
various parts of Canada, this
show, which began 29 years ago
behind a local high school, has
grown into the largest logging fes-
tival in the world.

Events are planned for every

member of the family — from
children's sports to a truck logger’s
todeo.

The Squamish Days R.V. Rally,
held in conjunction with Squamish
Days, has attracted recreational
vehicle owners from as far away as
Florida, New York, New Jersey
and California.

The weekend kicks off on
Thurs., July 31 with a Timber
Queen Pageant.

Ten young ladies will vie for the
Timber Queen Crown, and reign
over Squamish for the following
year.

On Friday, most of the action is
downtown, where local merchants

organize and sponsor a number of

activities including carving out
chairs with a powersaw, a clown
workshop, a barbecue in the
Chiefview Centre parking lot,
musicians, and many other color-
ful activities.

The Riggin’' Romp Dance, also
held on Friday night, features
music by Eimer Tippe and Super
Country at the Civic Centre.

Children's sports will be played
Saturday morning on the Civic
Centre playing fields. There is no
charge to enter, and every child
will receive free ribbons, pop, and
hot dogs.

The Novice and Intermediate
Class logging show starts from
noon until 4:30 p.m.

Whoop it up Saturday night at
the Logger’s Stomp dance. Held
in the ice arena, the dance attracts
aver 1,200 partygoers.

On Sunday, the day begins with
the Elk's breakfast at 7 a.m.

There will also be an in-
terdenominational hymn service at
the pavilion. and later, a 10 km
fun run.

The logging championships
begin at the Sports Grounds Sun-
day afternoon,

Other sights include the power-
ful hot saws with their giant ex-
pansion chambers.

Monday is the final day of the
festival weekend, and it ends with
a Truck Logger’s Rodeo.
