The mild-mannered, New-
foundland dog is part of a six-
month project to see if animals
have a therapeutic effect on resi-
dents in institutional settings.

“It’s obvious that pets provide
something medicine or drugs can't
provide, but it’s something that
has yet to be proven in a scientific
study,”’ she said.

TOUCH STIMULATION

‘‘These people are being charted
for an increase in stimulation,”
said Hawe.

“The stimulation in touch is
more than medicine can provide.
They start communicating with
people around them. An outside
stimulation gives them a reason to
live a bit longer.”’

Hawe said Evergreen House has
a cat in residence, but most senior
citizens’ homes do not allow pets.

She said she is hoping the
study’s results, which are likely to
be positive, would encourage in-
stitutions to allow pets.- .

FUNDS NEEDED

‘‘Maybe animal shelters could be
built beside hospitals or extended

care facilities,’’ Hawe said.

The study will develop guidelines

_for taking animals into rest homes,

she said, noting that this would be
the first time guidelines of this
kind would have been written in
Canada.

But she noted in order for the
project to complete its goals it ©
needs additional funding. She said
people interested in supporting the
