I. know enough not to carry money or other valuables in a suit- case but I don’t like the idea . of anyone pawing through looking. for the stuff I didn’t pack! Answer: I’ve got some bad news for you about suitcase locks. Experts tell me that almost any suitcase can be opened | by a piece of plastic or by ore of three standard keys. dn’ an effort to: stall theft, the manufacturers turned. to combination — locks. Unfor- tunately, these can be open- ‘ed'by dropping the case on a corner, jarring the frame. Another ‘problem. with locks is that even if you find a fairly secure one, the bag itself can only be as secure as it’s fabric. I'd rather leave my bag unlocked than have some, crook with a hammer or knife do a number on it. Since my bag’ contains nothing of value (including my wardrobe!) {'d like to have a bag left to tote home the remains. ° Buying expensive ‘luggage can be an invitation to theft — who buys Gucci bags to haul Woolworth’s T-shirts? Rather than open the bag the thief is apt to grab the whole thing. Expert thieves watch DISTRICT OF - and hotel for people carrying choice luggage and try to catch thém off guard in airports lobbies. Tired travellers, engaging in a tearful reunion at an airport don’t watch their bags too well. If you ever have to carry anything of value in a suit- case, pick up a new.one — at the Salvation Army thrift shop. Tie it up with a couple ‘of yards of old rope, using plenty of knots. Put on your best set of worn-out denims and tally-ho! Dear Barbara: “On a recent visit to Los Angeles, my hotel rocm door didn’t have a lock — J was given a card that I slip- ped into a slot in the door to open it. Ever since I saw the movie “Hotel”? I’ve been wary. of hotel keys, not so. much from the standpoint of * theft but I’m a single woman and travel quite a lot on - business. Just how do these locks work and how secure are they? There was no point asking the hotel — would they tell me ‘‘Our. locks aren’t worth a damn but they cost a fortune to install so we’re stuck with them.”’ Answer: There are several new types of hotel security locks that. are.a thousand percent . improvement ‘over the old .keys: stamped with the hotel name: and room ‘number. What’ 's secure about some- thing ’ that says “If carried. “away, drop in the nearest mailbox’’?' The system you describe sounds as if it might be Uniquey (or Ellissonlok or Gardgard) which are com- puterized systems. As you arrive in the hotel and are assigned a room, an opera- ‘tor with a special. access - number punches a code into the computer. The door lock changes automatically and. ‘an’ access catd is punched © “out. at random from a series billion possible ‘ of four combinations. The household staff have pass cards but these too are changed regularly. When you are inside your room there is a button to push and even the pass cards don’t’ work. To enter your room in case of emergency the secu- rity staff can be issued still another card. I'm told that the system is so good that the only break- ins have occurred when the doors were left wide open by occupants. It’s the luxury traveller who benefits from NORTH VAN EAST KEITH RD.
