on North Shore

TODAY MARKS the start of the first-ever Na-
uonal Crime Prevention Week in Canada but that
doesn’t mean much to police forces in North and

West Vancouver.

As Cpl. Don Jette of the
North Vancouver RCMP
puts it: ‘‘We're not planning
anything out of the ordinary
because we're so active in
crime prevention programs
anyway " >

Instead Jette, West Van-
couver Police Cst Dave Mar-
skell and others at the two
detachments involved = tn
crime prevention will con-
tinue with another week of
activities aimed at increasing
residents’ participation in the
fight against crime

The situation in’ North
Vancouver, throughout the
week, in fact. is typical of
what's involved in both

municipaliues throughout the
year.

On tap are a_ Business
Crime Prevention Seminar
for Edgemont Village mer-
chants, a talk to. semior
eitizens in the Kiwanis Tower
On security, an armed rob-
bery seminar for merchants
and a Neighborhood Watch
meeting.

None of those sound like
stereo-type police activities
but over the past half-dozen
years, those programs have
come to play an integral part
in policing.

The community-policing
concept being pushed by Na-
tional Crime Prevention
Week has been a mainstay of

police efforts on the North
Shore for several years.

Programs ranging from
Neighborhood Watch to
Block Parents, emphasize
that the best chance for crime
prevention hes with increas-
ing involvement of citizens

While the exact impact of
the programs is hard to deter-
mune itis difficult to com
pile statistics on the number
of crimes that might have
been committed in the
absence of a high-profile pro-
gram — police have embrac-
ed them wholeheartedly and
devoted energies to getting
the crime prevention message
out to all age groups.

Which is why North and
West Vancouver will be cele-
brating National Crime
Prevention Week by carrying
on with efforts that go on
every week.
