It has been brought to our notice that a reference to Ms. Paddy Boyle, president of the West Vancouver Teachers Association, in a reader's letter published in the Sunday News of February 14, 1982, may have been open to misin- terpretation. The letter from Mr. Tom Reid of West Vancouver gave his personal im- pressions of a public meeting of West Vancouver School Board on February 8, 1982, at which Ms. Boyle had spoken during the closing question period. Mr. Reid's letter stated: “Mrs. Paddy Boyle could extend to the Chairman the same courtesy that he did to her, by listening to his replies to her questions rather than carrying on a press conference during his period. It caused me to question the sincerity of her purpose!” Mr. Reid's letter was checked before being passed for publication by the un- dersigned writer, who was personally present during the meeting in question for the purpose of reporting it. This writer's in- terpretation of Mr. Reid's “press conference” remark was that it was not intended to be taken literally - but that it referred solely to the fact that Ms. Boyle, acting in her official capacity, - used the time given to her during the question period to deliver a speech rather than ask a question u> questions of the chair. Having formed the same impression from personal observation, the writer saw no reason not to print Mr. Reid’s remark as a fair comment relating to a public figure on a matter of public interest. Ms. Boyle: a misinterpretation In printing the remark, however, The News is no sense intended to imply that Ms. Boyle had literally conducted a “press con- ference” during the question period. If that implication was accidentally conveyed to Ms. Boyle and other readers of Mr. Reid's letter. The News apologizes to Ms. Boyle for any annoyance and embarrassment the misin- terpretation may have caused her.
