SQUAMISH CANOES

The Squamish band has
been racing canoes for a
longtime. _

The vessels aren't the
small sports models
propelled by one or two
people that can be seen on
many Canadian
every summer weekend;
These ones are about 16
metres long, and weigh
nearly 350 kilograms. ;

It takes 11 people to man
each of the three canoes
owned by the Squamish
band, ‘Squamish Chieftain.”
“Warrior, and ‘St. Theresa.”

$3000. The value lies in the
material-the canoes have to
be carved out of a singic
cedar tree. Cedars of the

right height are hard to find
these days.
