The Women of Margaret Laurence, running May 8 to 10, is a one-woman show performed by Norma Ed- wards to celebrate National Book Festival. Edwards’ performance has been hailed as “arresting and enjoyable absorbing” Now for something dif On May 2 you're in for something completely different when Stage 33 opens the Canadian premiere of STRAIGHT UP. This British farce opened in the 70’s at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, the centre which is “the prolific source of London’s new and ex- perimental theatre and the most important spawning grounds for new drama.” At that time The Guardian (Ray Conlegue, Clobe and Mail) and “breathtaking” (Margaret Laurence). Laurence’s remarkable heroines, Hagar, Rachel, Morag, Stacey and Vanessa are the challenge Norma Edwards has set up for herself in her acclaimed one- woman show. And for its second production, Presentation House is staging a play from the Restoration Period. Lock Up Your Daughters, said it had “more truly funny lines and situations per minute than anyone has a right to expect.” When it played in New York a few years later, the New York Times described it as “a domestic comedy of horrifying undomesticity.” STRAIGHT UP has overtones of a Joe Orton or Feydeau creation: full of double entendres’= and mistaken identities. A local performed by North Van- couver Community Players, runs May 14 to 24. This boisterous comedy musical is adapted by Benard Miles with music by Lionel Bart. Presentation House will repeat its Summer School programs from July 7 to August 15. Classes will be offered in drawing and painting, crafts, fabric arts, drama and creative movement. priest gives a young parole a big chance to go straight by placing him in the home of a nice, normal suburban family.
