In a New York restaurant, [ BEEN a long time coming, but I see where waterguns and burn them in in the war against smokers. They are taking out large advertisements in the American magazines and complaining that the smok- ers are being discriminated against. It could be that we'll soon see the same thing in Canada. But then again we may not. Most of our maga- zines are branch plants of the United Church and simi- lar moralizing bodies, with the result that they are as pure as a baby’s powder- covered bottom. I speak — in case you've forgotten — as one who has never smoked a cigarette in his life. My old man put me off with his pipe-smoking. But his weedish activities never did me any harm, even though the anti-smoking lobby would have it that ! should never have survived my teens. I mean, my old man cast off more smoke than the Royal Hudson, and lived to a ripe old age. The advertisements of which | speak are reprints of a New York Times article written by Stanley S. Scott, the vice-president of Philip Morris, and Mr. Scott makes some powerful points. He says that in spite of all “the beautiful civil rights laws, the voting rights act, and a myriad of an- ti-discrimination laws, mil- lions of Americans (for which also read Canadians) are still forced to sit in the backs of planes, trains and buses. Some, indeed, , are even denied housing and employment. These unfortunates are, of course, the smokers. (Which reminds me that smokers aren’t even allowed to board our buses. Not if they’re smoking. Which could be one reason the buses are fos- ing money. The enti-smoking lobby is every bit as vicious as other so-called public interest pressure groups. Not only have they sent smokers to the back of the bus — in more senses than one — they are also practis- ing terrorism. Scott states, for ‘example, . that “the American Cancer Society is promoting pro- grams that encourages peo- ple to attack smokers with cannisters of gas, to blast them with horns, to squirt them with oversized the head of a militant anti- smoker organization zapped a smoker in the face with an aerosol spray can. In a Seattle drug store, a man puffing on a cigarette had a gun pulled on him. In a Los Angeles bus, a smoker was fatally stabbed when he objected to being told by a non-smoker that he - should put out his cigarette. There was a shootout in the New York subway over vs smoking terrorists waking — and sleeping — hours. Right here on the North Shore, Ayatollah lovers on council have tried to legislate rigid non-smok- ing rules for restaurants. As Scott says, discrimina- tion is discrimination, no matter what it’s based on. Oh well, there’s always the Charter of Rights. Isn’t there? : eee A lot of Asians have been entering this country by us- ing forged passports. They use the passports to get on get this straight by Doug Collins smoking, and a smoker was ‘killed. ' T haven’t yet heard of that kind of thing happening in Canada. .But don't say it can't happen. We always catch up on American trends, and Lord knows we're not short of loonies. The real danger in all this is not only that smokers will be treated like untouchables, but. that we will become a sort of Ayatollah Land in which social engineers and otker fanatics will rule our PITCH AND PUTT TOURNEY PLAYING TIMES have been ‘ arranged by golf pro Ron Fitch for the Ambleside Pitch & Putt golf tournament .
