WY artists worked behind the scenes ALTHOUGH Midge Robertson and Norma Sorensen were beth artists, they made their great- est impact on the arts community in West Vancouver as supporters and mentors. Robertson was a sculptor who attended the Vancouver School of Art in the carly 1930s. Beginning in 1939 and through to the *50s, her work was steadily exhibited with the Sculptor’s Society of British Columbia. In the carly °50s, Robertson opened The Studio Shop in Dundarave. She was weil connected with the local artists and the shop sold their work in additien to crafis and Inuit sculp- ture. Robertson originally lived in the back of the shop and made . designer lampshades to augment her modest living. Lacking time and money, most of her sculptures were miniatures in clay and wood rather than the cast bronze that she preferred. By 1962 the shop was moved to a Jarger, more elegant loca- tion and Robertson purchased a small house on Jefferson Avenuc. The house was renovated and a studic »s added to the back. In the 1970s, Robertson sold her shzse «¢ The Studio _. Shop and went to Capilano College to continu: ker soork in ~ sculpture. She continued to sculpt until she was dis. . ed by by arthritis. Robertson died in 1998. ‘See Sorenson page 28
