Friday, June 4, 1999 - North Shore News — 21 New dawn for Sunny Day | Bob Mackin News Reporter IT’S springtime and most days are sunny on Dan Hoerner’s farm in arid eastern Washington. Hoerner is guitarist with Sunny Dav Real Estate, a Seattle band that rocketed to indie stardom with its own brand of emo- uonal, melodic grunge five vears ago. Hoerner has owned the 15 heetare farm with his wife since 1995 when the band broke up. it’s a 90-minute drive from where he grew up in Spokane. The Hoerners grow pears to peaches and filberts to walnuts in what he describes as a “self-sus- taining food forest”. “It's like my dream come true. [ve always wanted to have a farm and Pye always 'vaned toward being away as much as possibie from the hand of man. Pm not a real city dweller. Everything I bring to Sunny Day comes from that love.” The quartet reunited in 1997 after almost two years apart and recorded a third album last summer. Though he’s continuously writing songs on an acoustic guitar at the farm, Hoerner’s band- mates have yet to pay him a visit. And he strongly doubts Sunny Day Real Estate would ever jam in a barn. “The land is strictly land, | haven’t brought rock to it. [ don't think I'd ever play out here, it would be too loud.” Hoerner formed Sunny Day Real Estate with bassist Nate Mendel and drummer Williany Goldsmith in 1992 . Jeremy Enigk, a longume friend of Goldsmith’s, hung around the band’s jam sessions and joined as singer wi hen Mendel went to Europe with his other band, Christ on a Crutch. Hoerner gladly welcomed Enigk to take over the singing duties so he could concentrate on guitar. “It turned aut to be really good, Jeremy's got that great voice. Obviously Jeremy needed to be in the band.” Sunny Day Real Esrate released Diary to widespread critical ison SUNNY Day Real Estate’s Dan Hoerner (left) and bandmates William Goldsmith, Jeremy Enigk and Je “ieft | Palmer (who has since been replaced by Joe Skyward). The band played Richard’s on Richards last Saturday.
