The trade in alternative methods of commuting to
Vancouver next year could well reach black market
proportions. Especially if our well-loved Ministry of
Transportation and Highways docsn*t manage to
find the millions necessary to upgrade the bottleneck

approaches to the Second

Narrows. In case you

missed it, next year is when the North Shore gets to
practice its emergency response drill — every day —
while the Lions Gate Bridge gets a $78 million
makeover. When the Guinness family foily was built
60 years ago it was a bridge to the furure. Now it is a link to our past and will
remain pretty much so for the next 40 years, since all that will change is the lanes
will get wider and the sidewalks will go outside the bridge deck. Meanwhile, we
should be able to spend much more than the $7 million spent thus far on stud-
‘ies while wrangling over tunnels and tolls. Now, about that boat...

surrounding the golf course.

regarding traffic congestion,

build it (the centre) on the
east side.”

That’s ridiculous for a city of

our size to have a three-lane
bridge. Why spend that
amount of money without
getting more lanes. How
will we attract the Winter
Olympics with that bottle-
neck?

cept, just like the tunnel
