THIS is about an
astonishing quirk ot
fate.

T recognize that Tam oki
enough to have enjoyed quite
a few quirks in my day, but
this one strikes me as prety
amazing.

1 was sitting on my stool in
the kitchen a few davs ago,
thinking about what's for din-
ner, as usual, when the phone
rang. The person calling was
someone [had neither seen
nor heard from in 52 years.
Think of it.

Irene Campbell, she said,
and inumediately [saw her in
my head, a skinny guict
intense child, one of those
who made up my first school
in Sylvan Glade.

The school comprised chil-
dren from a ciuster of home-
steads, roughly 30 miles from
my home town, Prince
George, I was geing on 19
years of age, trying to warrant
respect.

She was maybe 12, 13, as I
recall, a serious child, obedi-
ent, seeming to carry a load.
Her parents had made room
in their house for the school-
raarm, you see, and in order
to give me privacy they, five of
them, occupied the other bed-
room at the other end of the
log house.

There was no town, you
understand, just a clutch of
optimistic hard-working fami-
lies bent on making a home
and a living. There were
maybe five, six families, one
bachelor and two tie-hackers
and, as [ recalf, 14 children —
enough to qualify for a one-
room facility with pvo outside
toilets and one cast-iron stove,
some benches and a black-
board.

were representative of all
those determined people who
were bent on a new life after
the First World War. They had
met in England, her home,
when Sran was in the army,
and they had rejoiced in the
gitt of land thar came from
the Canadian government.

She had made her living in
her home country as 2 lady’s
maid — it is expressive of her
daundess nature that she did-
n’t flinch from the torally
inadequate situations she
would have to deal with in the
New World. Ir was she who
named the little hamlet
“Sylvan Glade.”

She was astonished on her
arrival at the breadth of
unspoiled Canadian wilderness
and reveled in the bird life
and wild fowers. Alas, the
area was ravaged by fire short-
ly after their arrival, and when
I came to it some years later
there was little to rhapsodize
about.

But it was their own. Their
log barn, sheltering two hand-
some horses, their log house
with land to keep them in
food and Bassie for the milk.

I have to tell you, we ate
Bossie during May and June
before school was out. After a
winter of moose-meat in every
known guise she was a great
treat.

joined the army and made
new lives altogether.

Irene herself became a
school teacher and married
and had a family. She lives -
now in Prince George, whic
is some 15 times bigger th
it was in my youth. They nog
have “old-timers” who tell
their stories about what it w
like “then.”
