checking with the authorities
and with Jerome Caminada,
who by then was the foreign
news editor of The Times and
had been with us in Hungary
and Romania.

There is one major inaccu-
racy in the story, How could
Chivo have missed it?

One night in 1941, while
on the run in Poland, a
Welshman and I nearly walked
into Auschwitz.

I stated that that was
where “the millions died.”
But that has long been dis-

credited by the Polish govern-
ment. When I wrote the book
30 years ago, though, |
accepted it.

Contrary to what Chivo
say's 1 do not disbelieve “any-
thing connected with the
Auschwitz story.” Auschwitz
was bad enough and a fot of
Jews — and others — did die
there.

Finally, Chivo, up yours, as
we used to mutter to the
guards in Stalag VII1B.
