"Stalking the quiet From page $4 to the dam, a hiker wishing to visit some of the giants will find what Kelman calls the Jewell Trail. A bright ribbon marks the trail entrance. The trail features sev- eral large trees and is an easy loop off the Seymour Dam Road. The Jewell Giant, a red cedar with an estimated height of 200 feet can be reached just seven minutes in from the road. The Varley Giant is found halfway up the loop. The fir has a 26-foot cir- cumference and an estimated height of about 250 feet. Further up the road to the dam, just after the bridge across MacKenzie C. reek, Kelman has sketched out the Frederick’ Varley Trail and Earl Kelman Trail. The entrances are marked with plastic ribbon. Varley was one of the Group of Seven painters who spent time painting and exploring the valley. Earl Kelman was Ralf’s father. The outdoorsman, woodworker and IWA shop steward had a cabin in the Seymour River Valley during the 1930s.- Both trails lead toa grove of huge ancient trees ay, hassel with ferries when all the fun of a Gulf Island _ community festival is happening at Deep Cove Daze! _ Wat's On _ “S On ‘Cove village comes alive with fun, and there’ . lots to ‘do for all ages; : ae for the kids; we entertainment at our Jou _ food fair & beverage ‘garden, end unique craft offerings fren o local artists...“ Don't pee your swimsuii-the water's great this year od the beachcombing i is fine.
