“In those days, the bus stopped

there to the lighthouse.” remembers |

Cramond.

His father chose the postal name
for the district, calling it Sherman
after the first residents in the area,
and ran a store, tearvom, gas sta-
tion and post office on the property.

The original cottage was half
the size of the two-car garage that
now stands in its place. “One cor-

_ner.was held up by wisteria,”. he

notes wryly. The wisteria grew
from a cutting that was given to his
father by a Japanese worker at the
nearby Great Northern Cannery. It

‘reportedly came from the Japanese

Imperial family’s wisteria.

Today, the Department. of
Fisheries . research: laboratory
stands in place of the old cannery.
