30 - Sunday, Septernber 18, 1994 - North Shore News New Osteoporosis program coming to British Columbia THIS FALL, the Osteoporosis Society of B.C, (OSTOP) launches an innovative new program — the Osteoporosis Prevention and Self- Management Program (OPSMP) in locations throughout British Columbia. This group educational program aims to prevent the condition and, through self-efficiency, improve the Inanagement of existing osteoporo- sis — a disorder in which a reduc- tion in bone mass causes bones to become thin, brittle and easily bro- ken. Osteoporosis affects over one million Canadians. Currently, this condition costs our health care system one billion dollars per year. As the baby boomers age, more and more of the Weigh the value of: ° neighbourhood or near family an population will be affected. The tragedy of this situation is that 50% of all cases are preventable: [ts inci- denve can be reduced significantly by education about lifestyle, exer- cise, diet and medications, The program is not meant to take the place of services provided by health care professionals: instead it encourages individuals to ask questions, to assume responsi- bility for the daily management of their health, and to take an active role in planning their treatment pro- gram.
