Carson Graham crowns its king Layne Christensen STYLE NOTES JUDGING FROM the roar from the crowds gathered in Carson Graham secondary’s gymnasium a fortnight ago, you’d think the Eagles had just won the provincial bas- ketball championships. Instead, the occasion turned out to be the crowning of the first-ever Mr. Carson Graham. Fifteen of the graduating class’ most talented; fashionable and dar- ing young men competed for the honor amidst a frenzied mass of mostly screaming, mostly female classmates, with the odd parent, _ teacher and.talent scout thrown in. ip The Smen of Carson Graham” - . made their first rurn down the nun- - way in casualwear from their own, closets and-from The Gap, Aritzia® *. and Hill's of Kerrisdale.. Chris Breikss got some laughs with his stand-up comedy routine as did Mentzos, alias Captain Merry Stuebing, with his moving rendition of the theme from Love Boat. . ‘Dino Escutin‘s outstanding Michael Jackson impersonation should ensure he has no shortage of dance partners at grad. Angus Fergusson's Highland Fling rope- jumping might not prove as popular beneath the glitter ball. But what really brought down the house was Arlen Hansen's cover of the Boyz ll Men hit End of the Road. His flawless performance had at least one starry-eyed young fan reduced to tears of lustful admira- tion and s dozen members of the as-yet-te-be-formed Arlen Hansen Fan Club rushing the stage to pep- per him with roses and wistful air- borne kisses. Tuxedos and tails from Classy ‘Formal Wear were donned next for judging of the second-to-last cate- gory. The classic penguin suii showed up on more than one guy (Ross Gold, Evans), tails were seen on others (Mike Danks looked dapper in grey), and the more adventurous — contestants exhibited their fashion sense through their choice of acces- :, Sories: turquoise cummerbund and bow tie (Ezra Tsamkiranis), . bronze brocade vest (Escutin), white tie and silk scarf (Ress). In response to the question “Which celebrity has influenced you the most?,” hockey player _ Archer’s spokesmodei-perfect - _ response was “Jack Nicklaus ... um, er, ] mean ... Nicholson.” When asked if he thought vio- lence on TV had influenced the younger generation, track-and-field star Breikss swiftly pointed the fin-” ger at Elmer Fudd and Wiley Coyote for committing “senseless acts of violence.” Thespian Fergusson, when asked to choose three adjectives to describe himself, chose “energetic, aggressive and green.” Green? Mentzos, whose goals include graduating from the Barbazon School of Modelling and “pursuing, a lucrative career as a hand model,” moved the audience with his sou!- ful solution to the Bosnia-Croatia conflict: “I believe the children are our future.
