Finishing touches: trends, themes, trinkets ACCESSORIES COVER fashion this season, since longer lengths and neutral colors provide a perfect backdrop. Belts, hats, vests, neckfaces, hair accessories and handbags are the top trinkets for spring. Ina nutshell: belts go wide, necklaces get long, vests become simplified, hats are softer and handbags both shrink and grow. Since longer skirts are the big news items, belts are a natural focus. Textured, natural-colored leathers are popular with silver hardware and accenis in 1%2-inch to two-inch widths. Necklaces drape in swingy strands and are doubled for more impact. They hang longer to balance the long skirt lengths. Aromantic feeling in fashion brings back pearls and flower beads. Vests continue where they left off in winter. They’re in less dec- orative, cleaner styles which work well with °70s looks and pretty, romantic separates Western and African styles. Look for them in long suit shapes, soft crochet, leather and ethnic prints. Hats are catching on. Bandanas worn wrapped around the head and headwraps are sup- posed to be the new “‘hat"’ for those who want to bare the head while covering it. The classic beret adds to the hip-hop culture in fashion. Novel- ty baseball caps are seen every- where. Since most designers showed models with long hair in their spring collections, hair accessories are selling well.
