a shows: ; 28 ~ Sundzy, September 20, 1992 — North Shore News The public can learn all about arthritis at mini-fair Tuesday SEPTEMBER IS Arthritis Month _ and arthritis awareness and educa- tion are the focus of a number of activities planned by the North Shore branch of the Arthritis Society. fnformation tables were set up at several public locations earlier this month, but the main. event is a mini-fair being held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Lions Gate Hospital, 231 East 15th St., North Vancouver, on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The fair is open to all who would benefit from a _ greater knowledge of arthritis, its treat- ment and the services available. Pat Parr-Person, branch pro- gtam director, arranged the event so the public can meet a number of professionals on a one-to-one basis during the evening — a -method proven highly successful at previous fairs. ~ ‘Some subjects: will be supported by audio-visual presentations and Leona Golding from _ recCentre - William Griffin will lead chair ex- _ ercises. Everyone will be able to par- ticipate during the exercise time and it is usually the hit of the evening, says Arthritis Society North Shore branch president Stewart McGill. Jacquie Martin of the society’s children’s progam will also be - present, and McGill urges parents and friends of young people with arthritis to take advantage of the opportunity to find out more about the program. : Included in the children’s pro- gram is a four-day annual retreat at Camp Capilano — a place where young people from the province get together to share good times. Of personnel experience are needed to conduct interviews with people’ who are interested in becoming volunteers, The interviewer will help individuals to select a volun- teer position that best suits them. GET INTO SCOUTING September is Registration Month for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers. SCOUTS CANADA year, in addition to a transfer of branch operating funds, received magnificent financial support from three North Shore Kiwanis groups, the Provincial Auxiliary to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the City and the District of North Vancouver, and several generous individual donations. The retreat, which is supported by dedicated medical and counsel- ling staff, was attended by 31 young people with arthritis this year. “It is a wonderful experience for these children to feel that they can go to camp as other children do, and they develop a very posi- tive and determined attitude,’”” says McGill. People with arthritis may also be interested to learn that the North Shore Arthritis Self- Management Program is expan- ding this fall by adding an addi- tional six courses, which will be made available during the next three months. The course consists of six two-hour sessions over six weeks and covers a broad range of sub- jects to enable people to cope more effectively with their arthri- tis. Fees are’ nominal and include atextbook. . “We have many satisfied cus- tomers, but there are still. many more people with arthritis on the North Shore who couid improve their lifestyle by investing 12 hours of their time in the self- management “program,” says McGill. .
