Cool weather eases North Shore water

PREDOMINANTLY COOL,

wet weather thus far this

summer has reduced the usually high demand on the North
Shore water supply, leaving local reservoirs full.

“We're in significantly better
shape than we were last year,”
said Tom Heath, administrator
for water planning and operations
at the Greater Vancouver Water
District (GVWD).

Heath said the demand levels on
the water system are fess than
90% of what they were last year.

dry, hot weather, Greater Van-
couver posted a new record for
GVWD water consumption when
consumers drew 2,002,500,000
litres from the Capilano, Seymour
and Coquitlam reservoirs over a

24-hour penod (approximately
1,500 litres per capita for GVWD
consumers).

Extreme fire hazard conditions
also led to the closure of the
Seymour Demonstration Forest
and Lighthouse Park last August.
As late as October, the Capilano
and Seymour reservoirs hit a re-
cord low water mark.

But the weather this | summer
has proved to be a boon to the
water supply. Heath said.

“We're in pretty good shape so
far and if the weather continues in

Meanwhile, the GVWD is de-
veloping a water conservation
program that will enable the water
district to impose region-wide
restrictions during critical water
shortages.

The GVWD’s powers are cur-
rently limited to requesting the 17
GVWD municipalities to comply
voluntarily with water restrictions.

But Heath said the GVWD has
applied to the provincial

legislature so an amendment can
be made to the Water District Act
which will allow the introduction
of such conservation measures as
sprinkling regulations.

Approximatety half of the
communities served by the GVWD
water system have sprinkling
restrictions while the other half,
including Vancouver, Richmond
and Burnaby, have none.

All three North Shore
municipalities introduce water
restrictions during the summer
months.
