WITH THE arrival of spring,
many car owners spend time
sprucing up their vehicles, clean-
ing and repairing damage from
winter weather’s nastiness and
preparing them for the summer
ahead.

And, with the large amount of
plastic contained in today’s cars
-—~ 1991 models contain an average
of 258 pounds — special attention
should be given to those unattrac-
tive tears and gouges in piastic
parts. In addition to improving
your car's looks, sealing damaged
areas will prevent moisture and
other harmful elements from seep-
ing into your car’s body and ac-
celerating rust and corrosion.

In the past, even minor dings

and dents to a car’s exterior re-
quired a trip to your local body
shop. But, with Devcon Consumer
Division’s Plexus System, these
inconvenient and often expensive

The system includes a filler for
fiberglass and rigid plastic body
parts; a filler for such substances
as urethane and thermoplastics; an
aerosol primer that seals and
smooths repaired areas and allows
them to accept paints; and a
bonder for use on interior ac-
cessories, exterior trim, grilles,
lamp housings.

Corolla adds
needed boost

power 1.6 litre four cylinder
engine. This is the only standard
engine in its class to offer dual
overhead cams and four valves per
cylinder both of which help to
improve engine performance,
economy and efficiency.

Last year’s addition of elec-
tronic fuel injection gave this
engine a needed boost in horse-
power, and has improved
driveability and cold-weather
starting significantly.

The Corolla’s fuel economy is
very good, averaging 7.5 1/100 km
(38 mpg).

A 4 speed automatic transmis-
‘sion is available on the LE model,
but only a 3 speed automatic
transmission is available on the
base model. My test car's 4 speed
offered very smooth performance.
The standard 5 speed manual
transmission has a light touch but
the throws are long.

All Coroilas have four-wheel
independent suspension using
McPherson struts and coil springs
at both front and rear. Handling
is not particularly firm though,
and the ride is designed more for
comfort than performance. Power
assisted front disc brakes and rear
drum brakes offer adequate stop-
ping power for this relatively
lightweight automobile.

The Corolla’s interior is very
attractive and well laid out and
the fit and finish are excellent. My
only complaint is that rear seat
legroom and headroom is just
adequate.

Like other Toyotas, the Cor-
olla’s price is on the high side.
However, in its favor, the cost of
ownership is likely to be very low
considering its reputation for
reliability, its excellent warranty,
and good fuel economy.
