36 - Sunday, May 27, 1990 - North Shore News Hawaii offers great sailing, snorkelling, shopping IF YOU read last week's column on the restaurants in Honolulu, prepared with the assistance of my daughter and her fiance, you’ll wonder how they had the time and energy to do anything else but eat and drink. But first a comment on the flight down. To save $100 each on the airfare, they took Canadian Airlines to Seattle and transferred to Northwest to go on to Honolulu. “Never again!’ The joke is that they went to all the trouble of unholy flight times and a Seattle delay to save $100 — and then spent $700 on restaurant meais in eight days. And what's worse, they had a travel wise Barbara McCreadie Ee eee condo with a kitchen! Also on the down side comes a sunburn warning! My kid, who should know better, got a good case of sunstroke. ‘Stay out of the sun between noon and two and wear a good sunscreen.” Ah, hindsight! She recovered soon enough to spend her share of beach time. First recommendation: The Tall Green Sails: On Waikiki Beach at the Sheraton Hotel, catamarans depart at 9:30, H1, 12:30, 2 and 3:30. There is also a sunset Mai Tai Sail from 5 to 6:30 but reservations are essential for that one. Cocktail parties! Cdn $ at par, fee ody and molel< The first daytime cruise costs you $12 but after that, with a coupon given to you, only $6. There’s a bar aboard the 30-foot boat but I'd suggest you keep to the soft drinks. There's no shelter aboard pure sun, reflected off the ocean. Take a hat and a shirt. You're also guaranteed spray, so don’t wear your good clothes. The cruise takes you around the beach and maybe a mile owt. They enjoyed it so much that they went three times. The sunset cruise is more expen- sive but ideal for those who shun the direct sun. Snorkelling: 'f you have your own gear, bring it. There is snorkelling at Waikiki, but not much to see. For really good snorkelling, go to Hanauma Bay. If you have a rental car, it’s free unless you're too fazy to walk down the cliff. The shuttle bus is 50¢. If you don’t have your own gear you can rent. Otherwise, there are various tours to the bay -~ too many to list here but all sorts of combinations, some even including lunch. If you want a tour, call Diamond Head Tours, 922-0544, and they'll pick you up at your hotel. On your way to the bay, stop and pick up a bag of frozen peas to feed the fish. They swarm for them. Golfing: Just a word of advice: Check prices! For example, if you take a golf tour from one of the major hotels you'll get your bus transportation, clubs, cart and green fees. But if you rent a car and get yourself to the course you'll get all of the above for a lot less. For example, the tour to the Makaha Valley Country Club costs $110, Dan and his friend drove out - and paid $50, plus $i6 for clubs. They saved about $44 each.
