Question: I lost my job a few
monihs ago and my unemployment
insurance payments are about to
run out. I am a single parent of a
four-year-old daughter and, unless
I can find work soon I will have to
go on welfare.

My daughter kas medical prob-
lems which require regular treat-
ment and a special diet. I am very
concerned about how I will be able
to afford to pay for the attention
she needs. Can I get help?

Answer: As a single parent on
welfare you will receive a Medical
Services Plan (MSP) card from the
Ministry of Social Services and
Housing. This covers such things
as medical and dental treatment,

glasses.

If other things are medically
prescribed for you or your daugh-
ter, such as dentures or therapy or
rehabilitation, you can also get
these through the Ministry and
MSP.

If you did not have children or if
you were in a two-parent family,
you would be expected to pay the
premiums yourself.

Those who do not qualify for
free coverage but who have an
ongoing medical condition, such as
diabetes, can appeal and often get
medical coverage.

Regarding the special diet your
daughter needs, be sure to ask
your financial aid worker for the
Diet Allowance that the Ministry
provides.

This will give you up to $20 per
month to pay for the special food.
You will need a statement from the
doctor, dietician or nutritionist to
prove that the diet is necessary.
