MAILBOX If women want equal pay, they should ditch low-paying jobs Dear Editor: Equal pay for equal work of equal value won't do anything to help women get better pay. If a job category — secretary, for instance -- should suddenly command substantially more pay, employers would reduce the number of secretaries in order to stay competitive. They would strip jobs upgraded by equal pay decisions of functions that could be done by more junior positions. New job categories would be created to do the strip- ped-out functions, with job descriptions that ensured they would not attract equal pay atten- tion, e.g. typists, file clerks, mes- sengers, etc., in place of secretaries. They would probably be paid less than the job categories from which they were stripped are now. For the extra pay, more would be expected of the people doing the upgraded jobs. Such jobs would become more demanding and Recycling woman inspires Dear Editor: Rarely have | heard a person speak with such passion and perception. Described as the ‘‘guru of recycling’’ and the ‘‘garbage lady of Canada,” such is her zeal that Andrea Miller this year alone has already addressed more than 200 groups on preserving our en- vironment. It is well documented — to the shame of us all — that Canadians create more waste per capita than any other country in the world. We cannot continue to ignore her im- passioned plea for a safe environ- ment. We are all responsible. What impressed me above all else was her conviction that we as individuals can make a difference! Andrea Miller can be contacted through the local environmental group WHEN (World-Wide Home Environmentalist’s Network) which meets on the third Wednes- day of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the West Vancouver YMCA. In the case of secretaries, women would doubtless have to compete with men for the fewer jobs remaining. Equal pay for work of equal value as a lever to raise the average pay of women would fail. Unquestionably, there still is job and pay discrimination against women, but the only way it can be overcome is for women to equip themselves and compete for bet- ter-paid jobs. Doctors, engineers and pilots instead of nurses, stenographers and flight atten- dants. When women in any job have won recognition as equally reliable and productive they will be equally sought after and equally paid. Richard B.
