Versatile talks to continue CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS between the Joint Shipyard Con- ference and North Vancouver-based Versatile Pacific Shipyards Inc. are scheduled to resume Thursday in Victoria. The Joint Shipyard Conference, which represents the 23 unions employed in Versatile’s North Vancouver and Victoria yards, issued 72-hour strike notice earlier this month after receiving the latest contract offer from Versatile. A major stumbiing block in the current negotiations is a work- flexibility clause that union members have claimed would remove the traditional jurisdictions of the various shipyard trades. At its Nov. 15 meeting, the parks committee appointed a sub- committee to investigate all social, financig! and environmentst aspects of the 11 cabins in the Orchard area of Crippen park. Bob Gibson, acting manager of the GYRD parks department, said the sub-committee will report back with recommendations in February. Those recommendations would then be pzesented to the GVRD f board of directors. . i A North Shore Health study of the cabins’ septic tank sewage systems conducted during the summer concluded thai five of the cabin systems were malfunctioning. The remaining six systems were considered of questionable in- tegrity because they had been replaced or repaired without the nec- essary health department permits or approvals. North Shore Health recommended that if the five malfunctioning systems could not be connected te « public sewer system os an up- proved holding tank, the cabins should be demolished. Cabin tenants want the cabins repaired and preserved as heritage buildings.
