OPTIMIST CLUB CLASSES Learn public speaking STUDENTS CAN develop their poise and confidence through public speaking classes being of- fered by the North Shore Optimist Club. Young people, who were under 16 at December 31, 1988, can receive free instruction at two North Shore centres. Classes are offered at Carson Graham secondary school on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and West Vancouver secondary schoo! on Mondays from 7:30 to Students can still enrol in the North Vancouver sessions by at- tending on Tuesday, Feb. 21. West Vancouver classes begin on Mon- day, Feb. 27. Instructors for both groups have backgrounds with Toastmasters. Winners in an April 11 speakoff will go on to a zone final. Winners at zone level will go on to the district final in early May, where $1,500 (U.S.) scholarships will be awarded to the top contestants. The Optimists group encourages develop the skills involved in public speaking: ‘‘The Greek orator Demosthenes learned to speak through a mouthful of peb- bles.
