North Shore Meet Number 3 at Balmoral. medais NORTH SHORE gymnasts won three of the five girls’ all-around gold medals at the B.C. high school gymnastics championships in Victoria on the weekend. Aparna Ray of St. Thomas Aquinas was the top competitor in Level 5, the classification with the highest level of ability, with a 31.15 total score for four events. In individual events, she was second in vaulting, uneven bars and balance beam, and had a sparkiing 9.50 in the floor exer- cise for a first that secured her overall title. Handsworth’s Lara Banner scored a total of 34.50 for first place in Level 3. More than 40 competitors took part in this classification. Her 9.45 on the beam was first in that event and led to her slim margin of victory overall. Holly Kleban of Hillside edged Jennifer Steen of Windsor for the all-around Level | gold medal by 33.20 to 33.00. Steen had scored a 32,30 to 32.00 win over Kleban in the North Shore championships. Over 60 gymnasts were entered in Level 1 at the B.C’s. Kleban’s first place came as a result of her top-place 9.40 on the beam. Windsor, the North Shore champions, finished seventh in she girls’ team competition and eighth in the combined boys-girls totals. Hillside took eighth in the girls and ninth overall. Twenty-six-year-old Cechini, who played offensive guard for Simon Fraser University, said the deal couldn’t have come at a better time. “For me, it’s perfect. I graduate next month and I get to stay in my hometown. It’s a really good op- portunity,’’ said Cechini. A graduate of Carson Graham high school, the 6’2’? 270-pounder played linebacker for the North Shore Argos (GSL football) for two years before moving to Sad- dleback Junior College in Mission Viejo, Calif in 1984. In 1985, Cechini joined the SFU Clansmen, and in his senior year was elected to the All Conference Team and All Northwest Team. Cechini has been studying at SFU for the last three years on an athietic scholarship.
