DoucG COLLINS © get this straight YASSER ARAFAT is not one of my heroes. In his quest for allies at any price, he has been too close to bad blokes 9 - Friday, December 2, 1988 ~ North Shore News GRANT IN LIEU OF TAXES ICBC pays NV $1,050,915 THE CITY of North Vancouver will be receiving a $1,050,915 grant from the Insurance Corporation of B.C. and the District of North Vancouver will get $80,283 as part of over $2.5 million paid to 26 municipalities in lieu of 1988 taxes. As a provincial Crown corporation, ICBC is not required to pay business and property taxes. Instead, the corporation makes annual grants equal to the amounts which would be levied if it were a private business. The amounts are payable on claim centres, ad- ministrative offices, and storage and salvage yards. North Vancouver City receives the largest single grant for the corporation’s head office at the Lons- dale Quay. Vancouver receives the next largest pay- ment, $474,326, for nine ICBC locations. like Fidel Castro. But it is ridicutous for the U.S. to refuse him entry on the grounds that PLO elements may have engaged in terrorism against Americans and others. May! The refusal is a blatant bow to Israel and its supporters in the U.S. who have been howling for it. Amazing, is it not, that a tiny tail like Israel can wag a big dog like America? But it happens all the time. Why? Because American politicians are scared to death they won’t get Jewish money and votes come election time. The hypocrisy in this is over- powering. Arafat has been the mildest of ‘‘terrorists.’’ But even if he had not been, he could hardly Amazing, is it not, that a tiny tail like Israel can wag a big dog like America? But it _happens all the time.”” ne ee eee be worse than those in Israel who have had no trouble visiting America. ‘Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir himself is one example. Shamir, who then called himself Yizernit- zky, was prominent in the notorious Stern Gang. It was the Stern Gang that assassinated Count Bernadotte, the U.N. mediator who in 1948 was trying to negotiate a peace plan in what was then Palestine. Shamir is not known to have been involved in that particular killing, but... There are many others. Like former Prirne Minister Menachem Begin: In 1949 he was with the Irgun, perhaps the worst of the terrorist gangs. Begin directed the infamous massacre at Deir Yassin in which hundreds of helpless Arabs were wiped out — old men, women and children. But no one ever raised a voice against his entering the U.S. He even made political speeches there. Shame on you, Ronald Reagan and George Schultz. eek On the lighter side: The Times of London reported avtrecently that two Church of : England vicars, an altar boy, a NORTH VAN CITY Cemetery NORTH VANCOUVER City Council agreed Monday to seek increases for cemetery fees by as much as $68. And out of town guests will have to add a $180 non-refundabie. non-residence fee to their inter- ment costs. “We want to ensure that we don’t have everyone coming to North Vancouver to get buried,”’ cheirmaster and a convicted child molester pleaded guilty to a string of homosexual offences against children aged between seven and 13. But that’s not the item. One of the clergymen was called Rev. James BENT; the name of the choirmaster was Stuart EAGER, and a third in this unholy little gang gloried in the name of Raymond FULLALOVE. I didn’t make this up. What sentences the court handed down I don’t know. Pats on the hand, probably. eat Nearer home, I have received a Dishonorable Mention in Angles newspaper, the official sheet of the sodomite community. Yes, an editoria! in the November issue led off with the statement: ‘‘A vote for the Tories is a vote for Anita Bryant, Dan White and Doug Col- lins.”” Imagine that! And I didn’t even run, By the way, | know who Anita Bryant is and I also know who I am. But who is Dan White? In the same newspaper Stan Persky, who numbers among that fraternity and teaches I know not what at Cap College, had this in- telligence to impart: **If, by some homophobic catas- trophe, Canada’s only out-of-the- closet gay politician, Burnaby NDP MP Svend Robinson, got defeated, I was planning to move to Bangkok.” Bangkok is the place for you anyway, Stan. And if you teach English watch those commas. Too many of them make for bent reading. eee And here are some election bits that I wasn’t able to impart previously: The pundits kept saying that the election was a referendum on free trade. If it was, the Tories lost because they got only 5,625,288 votes to the others’ 7,458,754 ... In its special issue on Canada, The Economist magazine stated that Mulroney, Turner and Broadbent are all to the left of the Democrats in the U.S. So take that, you North Shore Tories ... And . Mulroney was described in the Sunday Telegraph as ‘‘a Harold Wilsonian india-rubber politi- cian.’’ Couldn’t have put it better myself @ fees rise said Ald. Frank Morris. Fees will go towards increasing levels of maintenance service in the city’s cemeteries in response ta complaints from the public. Subject to approval from the Ministry of Labor and Consumer Services, the increases will become effective Jan. 1 of the new year, and wil] be in line with similar fees charged by other municipalities.
