14.- Sunday, February 21, F98% - North Shore News WOULD IT bother you much if Jacques Parizeau, soon to be the new leader of Quebec’s Parti Quebecois, formed a government and then carried out his promise to withdraw Quebec from Confederation and establish Quebec as a sovereign republic? If it would, then you are the model of charity and patience; but for your own sake (it is not right that your charity and patience be exploited for another hundred years) you must read, or re-read, Peter. Brimclow’s brilliant, unarguable diagnosis of this con game in his book: The Patriot Game. . It took an outsider to says blunt- ly, publicly and honestly what most of us natives sensed but were too reluctant or too afraid to say: that contemporary Canadian na- tionalism is a fraud; and that the cost of the French connection has had a subtle but profoundly debilitating effect upon English Canadian politics. ‘The latest of a long list of such costs and the insufferable expan- sion of the French fact is to be found in the government's Bill C- 72.- This bill is a beefed-up version of the Official Languages Act, ex- tending bilingualism in federalin- stitutions and guaranteeing the - right to’ ‘trial i in either French or English.* ve, as This process of compulsory bi- lingualism has finally brought a decent number of Progressive. Conservative MPs to their, feet protesting this further jamming of French down English-speaking Canadians’. throats. ’ Their welcome, Jong-overdue rebellion is not likely 20 succeed, -because Brian Mulroney, like the Liberal leaders before him, is determined to build a power-base, not on legitimate conservative views, but on retaining the affec- tion of the francophones while carrying out policies pleasing to liberal-left voters in the rest of the country. It does not matter how angry — or how sincere they arc in their _ anger — they are, the English- speaking majority in Canada con- tinue to be subjected to forced bi- lingualism because each of the po- litical parties, under the guise of Patriotism and nationalism, is a- “whoring after those 75 House of Commons seats held by Quebec. All the parties were so eager to win Quebec seats that they stupidly | voted for the Official Languages Act. . That thoughtless act, done for grubby little political reasons, has started us off down the same crazy, illogical, divisive path as the poor daily-tortured Belgians, a body with two heads, Flemish and Walloon. The free marketplace, in lan- guages, produces the most produc- tive results; the state-directed, so- cialist, interventionist approach, the least productive results. Surely, in a country this vast, the logical, simple thing to do is to leave the learning and the use of language on a voluntary basis. If a French-speaking citizen of Quebec or another province real- izes it is in his or her interest to master English, they will do it, soon enough, voluntarily. The substantial majority of our Chinese, Sikh, Hindu and other immigrant residents and citizens, for personal advancement, have done so. When, in 1980, Quebec citizens voted in a referendum to decide whether or not Rene Levesque and his Parti Quebecois government should be able to negotiate the means of separating Quebec from the rest of the country, and the “no’' vote won by a slim margin, this was hailed as a good thing, for all of us. But in truth, as Peter Brimelow notes: “There is nothing inherently ig- noble or illiberal about Quebec separatism. And for English Canada, it was a solution, nota problem. The opportunity was missed by a degenerate leadership. But it will recur."” It will be a-blessing to the rest of Canada, not a Joss, when Quebec secedes. Canada cannot be sensibly governed until that secession takes place. The sensible thing for us to do, seeing that the politicians are of no help at all, mired in their bidding wars, is to take things into our own hands. The moment Jacques Parizeau is elected Icader of the Parti Quebecois, I will be sending him at least 10 bucks a month, for his campaign. If just three million western Ca- nadians and others sent him a pid- dling two dollars a month, with a note of encouragement, he would possess not only a huge campaign fund, but the enormous assurance of our blessing of his journey. i is the only way we can wine ‘(A DIVISION OF VINCENT, STEWART & VINCENT LTD) 1.
